The day before Gutierrez died, a judge found there was no longer probable cause to detain him on a charge of violating a protective order, so his release was pending.
But some people find the timing suspicious.
“It looks like they’re doing it again to willfully cover up how many deaths are happening in the jail,” Brandon Hanson, with Jailhouse Justice, an inmate rights group, said.
Lawrence Gutierrez is the 7th person to die while in custody of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. However, prior to his death, he was conveniently released, thus allowing Harris County to consider this death NOT in custody and keep it off their books. Further, they’re hiding what happened from the community by lying to journalists who reach out. We must understand this system is designed to allow county officials to sidestep accountability.
